It sounds like it's a bit of a personal pet peeve on the critic's part. The Manic Pixie, as he calls her, is probably not quite as universally shallow as he claims, although it's probably an easy stereotype that writers, directors, and actors should work to avoid falling into.
Not really sure what I think about the negative classification, though. There are certain types of characters that are stapes of cinema, and the young woman who draws the young male protagonist out of his shell has been around for a long time.
Long time no comment! Not being so cinematically inclined, I found this item opened my eyes to that character. I don't know how you would write them out completely either. It does seem like they are glorified a lot more though in recent films.
