Personaly, I've found sarcasm to be especially useful for dealing with mental retardation in the higher ranks of the army.
It only results in trouble when you are caught walking alone on base by the guards who ask you where your mandatory escort is and you reply - "Why, don't you see him? He's the 7 foot tall white bunny rabbit standing behind me. His name is Harvey and he'd really like to make your acquaintance."

It does kind of have that tendency...
There seems to be a dearth of people who appreciate the delicacies of the art!
Or it could be that the art tends to be overused or misused. Or all of the above.
